Daytona Beach, FL - Daytona Beach police say they arrested a woman who left two infants home alone for hours in an apartment filled with trash and dirty diapers. Police responded to a home in Daytona Beach at around 12:34 PM on Saturday after receiving a tip that two small children were left alone in an apartment. The woman who called police said that 25-year-old Katherine Christian told her she had left her two children, one 8-month-old and one 1-year-old, alone while she went to visit her mother and father at Halifax Health. The father of the children was at work at the time, according to arrest reports. Christian claimed she had a neighbor check on the infants periodically. Police tried to knock on the door, but there was no answer. They also tried to contact neighbors but were unsuccessful. Ultimately, they were able to enter the home by using a key that was given to them by the woman who reported the incident. The 1-year-old and the 8-month-old were found in a playpen in the apartment surrounded by dirty clothes and trash. According to arrest reports, there were dirty dishes covering the kitchen sink and counters, soiled diapers throughout the apartment, and trash covering most of the flooring. The baby crib was soiled with liquid and had several dirty wipes in it. Police say they caught up with Christian at Halifax Health. Christian told police a neighbor was supposed to let her know if anything happened at the apartment. She admitted the infants were left unattended for about four hours. Christian was taken into custody and charged with two counts of child neglect.
