Update: On Wednesday, the Daytona Beach City Commission approved a contract for the demolition of the aging former Daytona Beach Police Station and the purchase of two new drones for the police department.

The Daytona Beach City Commission will vote Wednesday night on the demolition of the aging former Daytona Beach Police Station and the purchase of two new drones for the police department.
The old police station is located at 990 Orange Ave. The building, constructed in 1957, is over 30,000 square feet and has been closed since 2009. The City Commission must vote on a $99,508 contract that would approve the demolition of the site.
Samsula Waste Inc., of New Smyrna Beach, would be in charge of the demolition project if approved by the Commission. Samsula Waste was the lowest of eight bidders for the demolition, according to City records. If approved, according to the terms of the contract, the project is expected to be completed within five months of the start of demolition.
Another item on the City Commission's agenda is the possible approval of two new unmanned aircraft systems (or drones) for the Daytona Beach Police Department. The DJI Dual Gimble drones, along with the purchase of a DJI Mavic Pro Platinum Fly System and one Flymotion Spark Fly Combo System, would cost a total of $76,295.
If the purchase is approved, the drones could help the police department with a wide variety of jobs, including locating missing people, cataloging traffic homicides and major crime scenes, and monitoring brush and structure fires.
