Update: The Daytona Beach City Commission approved $543,655 for a new sewer pump system and utilities for the site of the new First Step Homeless Shelter, and the Commission gave the go-ahead to use debt financing for a new $450,000 fire pumper for the Daytona Beach Fire Department.

During its Wednesday night meeting, the Daytona Beach City Commission will vote on whether or not to spend $543,655 to construct a new sewer pump system and extend utilities to the site of the new First Step Homeless Shelter.
The new 24-hour, full-service shelter was approved for construction earlier this year for the area off of International Speedway, west of I-95. If the Commission approves the measure for a new sewer pump system and utilities for the site, that could mean progress for the construction process. The City's Utility Department recommends that the City approve the measure for J.D. Weber Construction to build a new sewer pump system for the shelter site. J.D. Weber was the lowest of seven responsive bidders considered for the project.
As part of the project, utilities would be extended under International Speedway, including a 6-inch fiber optic line, a 6-inch HDPE force main, and a 12-inch water main, according to City records. The project is expected to be completed in September of 2018 if approved by the City.
J.D. Weber would be expected to reach substantial completion of the project within 210 days of beginning construction or the company could face daily fines of between $792 and $1,584.
Another item on the City's agenda for Wednesday is the purchase of a $450,000 E-One Typhoon fire pumper for frontline operations at the Daytona Beach Fire Department. If approved, the purchase would use debt financing from Branch Banking and Trust Company with an interest rate of 2.3%, according to City records. If the measure passes, there will be a public hearing on December 20.
