Daytona Beach, FL – Daytona State College President Tom LoBasso recently revealed more information about two of the college’s upcoming expansion projects. LoBasso spoke about the projects Thursday in honor of the upcoming 60th anniversary of the college. Since its founding in 1957, the college has grown significantly and LoBasso wanted to share plans about its future 5 and 20 years down the road. “It’s my passion to share the Daytona State story,” says LoBasso. “Our mission is to provide affordable, high-quality education that fuels and supports the region’s economy. Our students’ success is critical to the growth and well-being of Volusia and Flagler counties, as they become contributing members, workers and leaders in our community.” One of the new projects is a new $3 million soccer stadium set to be finished by this fall. It will be able to hold about 1,000 people and will have a concession area, press box, and a video scoreboard.

The new stadium will host the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division 1 Men’s Championship Tournament in the fall of 2018. In the past, this event accounts for 700 to 800 hotel bookings. “We will also look to host the NJCAA Women’s Nationals, as well as state high school championships,” says LoBasso. “DSC soccer is an economic driver for our community.” A new Student Center/Workforce Transition Building was also revealed by LoBasso. The $39 million, 84,000 square foot project will break ground on May 4 at 10 AM. The library, Writing Center and Career Services are expected to move into the new building upon completion.

The Student Center will also include an event space that can hold 400+ people, food services, as well as study, meeting and student club spaces. “We fully expect the new facility will engage even more DSC alumni and students through better access, increased visibility and proximity to other student resources,” says LoBasso. Each year, the library provides:
  • academic support to 200 students per day
  • electronic resources checked out more than 300,000 times
  • 12,000 checked-out books
  • answers to over 4,000 reference questions
  • info guides more than 100,000 times
  • library research instruction to over 4,000 students.
Every year, the Writing Center provides students with:
  • 5,600 tutoring sessions
  • 4,300 visits to the learning center called the Attic
  • 5,300 visits for general help
In the last year, Career Services interacted with 7,500 students through student visits, job-board registrations and classroom presentations. Overall interaction with Career Services has grown 80% in the last two years. “As the region’s public college, we proudly celebrate our 60th year in service to our citizens, our businesses and industry," says LoBasso. “The support of our community, our legislators and our benefactors allows Daytona State to provide timely programs and address student needs. Your generosity expands scholarships and resources for thousands of our students, giving them a foundation for the future.” Copyright Southern Stone Communications 2017.
