Daytona Beach, FL - A police officer is on the mend this morning after he was shot in the right arm by a man with a rifle late last night (November 25th) near an elementary school.

That's the word from the Daytona Beach Police Department following last night's incident, which unfolded just before 11 p.m. at the corner of Dr. Martin Luther King Boulevard and South Street.

DBPD spokesperson Lyda Longa says officers responded after getting several 911 calls from people nearby about a suspicious person "wielding a rifle" at that intersection.

"When officers arrived and confronted the suspect, he began shooting at them and they returned fire," Longa added. "That’s when the officer was shot in the right arm."

The suspect - yet to be identified by DBPD - fled the scene but was taken into custody minutes later at the corner of George and Marion streets, around a half-mile away from Turie T. Small Elementary School.

Longa says bystanders applied pressure to the wounded officer's arm before he went to Halifax Health Medical Center for treatment.

"He is expected to make a full recovery," Longa noted. "Police Chief Craig Capri was at the hospital with the officer and said he was in good spirits."

The suspect wasn't injured, according to DBPD.

It's not clear at this point why the man was carrying a rifle. We'll be working to update this story throughout the morning.
