Joe's Crab Shack Working On Daytona Pier Expansion

Daytona Beach, FL - City officials tentatively agree on an amendment that could give a popular seafood restaurant an additional 6,000 square feet for business.

Joe's Crab Shack has been a staple to the Daytona Beach Pier since the Landry's Inc. owned chain opened its doors in 2012.

Since then, the restaurant occupied a combined total of 25,859 square feet, which includes the 10,928 square feet of indoor dining space, the 8,206 square feet on top and the 6,725 square feet for outdoor dining.

But, after last night's (April 3rd) Daytona Beach City Commission meeting, Joe's could be closer to getting another 6,322 square feet, which will take up almost the entire west stretch of the pier.

That additional space would give Joe's extra room for dining and merchandise sales. In doing so, Joe's would be able to reach its annual percent of sales breakpoint sooner, which will increase the revenue paid to the city.

Part of the amendment, as outlined by Commissioner Robert Gilliland, says that any merchandise that's sold in the new area by Joe's would be constricted to a limit of 20 linear feet.

In the example he used, Joe's wouldn't be limited to something like two 10 foot tables. They could have one table near the entrance and one near the rear of the restaurant that could be used to sell merchandise.

The restaurant would be free to split it up however they want as long as it doesn't exceed 20 linear feet. As for how much space they can use up for dining, that would be up to the state Fire Marshal's Office.

The ordinance would also have Joe's provide an unobstructed six foot egress for pedestrians to walk through, as the pier would still be open to the public.

"It should also be noted that it doesn't impede on the fishing or the public access to the pier," said Daytona Beach Mayor Derrick Henry.

The amendment passed 7-0, meaning that a contract will now be drafted for approval at a future DBCC meeting.
