Daytona Beach, FL – The Daytona Beach City Commission discussed their hopes for the approval of funding for the First Step Homeless Shelter and heard about upgrades to the Peabody Auditorium in Wednesday night's meeting.
Several members of the commission are looking forward to Daytona Beach Mayor Derrick Henry’s presentation to the Volusia County Council at their meeting on Thursday. He will be speaking on behalf of the First Step Shelter.
City Commission members expressed their optimism that the County Council will do what they have previously suggested they will do: support the shelter financially. The City of Daytona Beach is asking the county for about 10 acres of land and $4 million. Of that money, $2 million would be used to build the shelter on county-owned land west of I-95 near the jail, and the remaining $2 million would go towards operational costs.
It was noted that other cities have already pledged money to the project as well.
Mayor Derrick Henry’s presentation of the First Step Shelter Board plan has been signed off on by the City Commission.
The City Commission also heard from the Peabody Auditorium Foundation. The Foundation has plans for a new sound system at the Peabody Auditorium that would cost $651,132.
The Peabody Auditorium Foundation was awarded a grant of $200,000 over two years and the Foundation presented a check to the Auditorium at the meeting for $100,000.
That money will pay for temporary upgrades to the current system like new wireless microphones, which will be incorporated into the new system later. The new system will be plug-and-play where performers will only have to plug in their own soundboard.
The Foundation hopes that the upgrade will be cost-saving as the Auditorium would not have to rent out equipment any longer.
