Daytona Beach Police Investigating Weekend Shooting Of A B-CU Student

Daytona Beach, FL – Police are investigating a Bethune-Cookman University (B-CU) student being shot in the leg on Saturday.

At around 12:15 PM on Saturday, Daytona Beach police responded to Halifax Health Hospital where a person came in with a gunshot wound to the lower right leg. There, police contacted the victim, 20-year-old B-CU student, Ray Jefferson. Jefferson said that he left the café at Dr. Martin Luther King Blvd. and State St. when he heard a bang and a then felt pain in his leg.

Jefferson said that he does not have any enemies and that he keeps to himself. At the time of the shooting there were no cars around, but after a while he saw his friend, another B-CU student, driving around. He got the friend to drive him to the hospital The 9mm bullet that struck Jefferson was submitted into evidence.

B-CU officials say there are no security cameras in the area of the incident, but they were able to find a video of Jefferson crossing the street and limping. Jefferson told police that he does not wish to press charges. In their report, police indicated that both Jefferson and his friend had cell phones but did not call 911. They also said that Jefferson was “not forthcoming with information.”
