Daytona Beach, FL - The Daytona Beach City Commission is expected to vote Wednesday on the purchase of more than $1 million in police cars, radios, and computers for Daytona Beach Police Department (DBPD) as the police department is in the process of hiring 24 new officers for a growing area of Daytona Beach. According to City records, DBPD is currently working on hiring 43 new officers, and 24 of those officers will be assigned to a "new growth" area surrounding LPGA Blvd. and Williamson Blvd., including the Tanger Outlet Mall. 19 of those officers will fill current vacancies. Funds for the new positions are available in the police department's operating budget, and the new officers will provide additional services for the rapidly developing area. In order to accommodate the new hires, DBPD is asking the City Commission to approve $957,679.27 for 24 new police vehicles, $35,631.36 for 24 new Dell laptop computers, and $105,861.44 for 24 police radios. The new equipment would be eligible to be covered by police impact fees. Another item on the City Commission's agenda is the possible authorization of a total of $2,000 to go to Bethune-Cookman University for a campaign to place a statue of civil rights leader Mary McLeod Bethune in the National Statuary Hall of Fame in the U.S. Capitol. $1,000 would come from the Bike Week Sponsorship Funds of Commissioner Rob Gilliland, and $1,000 would come from the Bike Week Sponsorship Funds of Commissioner Paula Reed.
