County Council Approves $970K Purchase Of Land Near Ocean Center For Parking

Posted

Volusia County, FL - In Thursday's meeting, the Volusia County Council approved the $970,000 purchase of 5 parcels of land in Daytona Beach that will be used for additional parking at the Ocean Center and for events on Main St.

Council members agreed that parking's always an issue in the area, especially for events like graduations at the Ocean Center. According to council member Billie Wheeler, the purchase of this property will give the county control over the area - especially when it comes to traffic and parking. Chair Ed Kelley said the purchase will end up generating revenue for the county. County Manager Jim Dinneen estimates that it could end up bringing in $30,000 to $50,000 a year.

Deb Denys opposed the purchase, saying it's the county's responsibility to provide access to the beach... not  to the Ocean Center.

In the end, the council approved the agenda item in a 6 to 1 vote - council member Deb Denys cast the lone dissenting vote.
