Ormond Beach, FL-The Volusia Flagler Family YMCA wants to raise awareness on water safety. A drowning awareness conference takes place on Monday at the Ormond Beach YMCA. With recent drownings in Volusia County, especially of children, attending the conference would be a good place to learn how to prevent drownings and near-drownings.

Florida leads the country in drowning deaths of children ages 1 through 4. District Aquatics Director Ginni Hiers said they hold an annual conference to remind residents and visitors about all types of water danger.

Hiers said that there are programs that will help pay for swimming lessons and teach children about water safety. There are also some programs for adults to teach them how to swim and for safety procedures, such as CPR.

The Water Safety News Conference begins at 10 A.M. and takes place on Monday, June 6 at the Ormond Beach Family YMCA on the pool deck. The Ormond Beach Family YMCA is located at 500 Sterthaus Drive, Ormond Beach, FL 32174.

Speakers scheduled to be included:

Ed Kelley, Mayor Ormond Beach

Steve Parris, SAFEKIDS Coordinator, Halifax Health Healthy Communities

Teresa Rand, President and CEO, Volusia Flagler Family YMCA

Eric Maday, Environmental Specialist from Florida Department of Health in Volusia County

Deputy Chief Ray Manchester and Mark Swanson with Volusia County Beach Patrol

As well a representative from Volusia County Fire Rescue

Water programs will take place in the pool from 10:15-11:15 a.m.
