Volusia County, FL - The County has announced that bridges from the mainland to beachside will be locked down at sundown on Thursday to prepare for the tropical storm force winds that Hurricane Matthew is expected to bring.

VCSO Deputies will be at the bridges to prevent access and barricades will be in place.

Those who live on the barrier islands and low-lying areas in the County are being strongly encouraged to evacuate before Hurricane Matthew arrives. Also, it's important to know that emergency crews won't be able to respond once we start getting sustained tropical force winds.

Public shelters in Volusia County will open at 8 AM on Thursday and a list of locations will be announced before they open.

Thursday at 8 AM all Votran bus stops will become evacuation collection sites to take people to a transfer point where they'll board school buses which will take them to a shelter. No fares will be charged during evacuation or return. All Votran vehicles will be removed from roads once sustained wind speeds reach 35 mph. Service will resume when the weather clears.

The Volusia County Citizens Information Center (CIC) is open. The CIC's phone number is 866-345-0345, and it'll be open until 7 PM on Wednesday. It will reopen at 8 AM on Thursday and stay open until conditions improve.

Sandbags are available throughout the county and locations can be found at NewsDaytonaBeach.com or Volusia.org/PIN.
