Lake Helen, FL - A 20-year-old Sanford motorcyclist is in critical condition after he was struck by a car hauler while trying to pick up debris from Interstate 4.

Branden Ditterline was airlifted to Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford soon after the accident took place around 1:40 PM Monday on the eastbound side of Mile Marker 117. That's near Orange Camp Road.

FHP Sergeant Kim Montes says Ditterline was riding his motorcycle with a group of other motorcyclists when he saw something fall from of one of the motorcycles in front of him and land on the road.

"He stopped on the side of I-4, got off of his motorcycle and ran into the center lane of eastbound I-4," Montes added. "The front of [a car hauler] struck [Ditterline] while he was still wearing his motorcycle helmet."

The driver of the car hauler - 41-year-old Todd Newhall of Palm Coast - wasn't hurt, according to troopers at the scene. He was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash, per the accident report.

The wreck forced authorities to close that side of I-4 for around an hour as paramedics tended to Ditterline and cleaned up the road.

Charges are pending the completion of the investigation.
