Bethune Granddaughter Arrested For Embezzling From Daytona Non-Profit

Daytona Beach, FL - The treasurer of the Daytona branch of the National League of American Pen Women (NLAPW) and granddaughter of the late founder of Bethune-Cookman University has been arrested for embezzlement. NLAPW is a non-profit that helps provide scholarships for college students. Daytona Beach Police (DBPD) say that in February of this year, the president of the NLAPW reported an embezzlement in the non-profit organization. Evelyn Bethune was the treasurer of the organization, and she had requested that funds from NLAPW's checking, savings, and CD accounts be transferred to a Fifth Third Bank in Daytona so that she could more easily manage the funds. The organization's president discovered missing funds from the accounts when she gained access to the accounts last September. According to arrest reports, Bethune had used money in the accounts for purchases at restaurants, gas stations, the doctor's office, and nail salons. DBPD says that Bethune embezzled more than $20,000 from NLAPW. She was arrested on Thursday afternoon at 2625 W. International Speedway in Daytona. She is charged with two counts of grand theft and one count of organized scheme to defraud.
