Beach Safety: Big Crowds & High Tides Expected For Labor Day Weekend

Posted

Daytona Beach, FL - It's shaping up to be a busy weekend for Volusia County Beach Safety.

Captain Tammy Malphurs spoke on WNDB's Volusia Today and said that as the Labor Day Weekend draws closer, It's all hands on deck.

And with Beach Safety out in full force for the weekend, they offer some guidance and tips for those headed to the beach.

According to Malphurs, midday high tides are expected throughout the entire weekend, which may lead to intermittent closure of vehicle access ramps. For those wishing to find parking, they're encouraged to find off-beach parking which runs from Ormond-By-The-Sea all the way to Bethune Beach. For maps and more information on beach driving, beachgoers can visit the beach driving section of the county website.

One important reminder they wish to offer is that beachgoers should leave only footprints and remove all items, especially trash, that they bring to the beach. Trash cans will be placed at regular intervals along the beach, and carts will be out to assist with collecting garbage. Environmentally friendly bags will also be available at toll booths upon request.

Those who need wheelchair access or beach wheelchairs, a limited supply is available at four different locations throughout the county, on a first come first serve basis at no charge. The locations are:

  • Flagler Avenue, New Smyrna Beach
  • Dunlawton Avenue, Daytona Beach Shores
  • Beach Headquarters, Daytona Beach
  • Cardinal Avenue, Ormond Beach

Malphurs also wants to remind beachgoers of the "most basic rule" of swimming in front of a staffed lifeguard tower. Rip currents are a possibility over the weekend, therefore beachgoers should always check beach conditions found at the lifeguard towers and accompany small children when going into the water.

Lifeguards are also being outfitted with vinegar at their towers in case of jellyfish stings.
