AAA: Gas Prices Drop Before Labor Day Weekend

Daytona Beach, FL - The final holiday of the summer travel season draws near and with it comes a dip in gas prices.

That's the report from AAA as declining demand and rising supplies have allowed prices at the pump to steadily slip lower.

With the current state average at $2.72 per gallon of regular unleaded, Volusia County drivers are seeing an average price two cents higher than the state average at $2.74.

Flagler County drivers are also seeing higher average prices at $2.76, just a cent lower than last week but four cents higher than the state average.

"Pump prices are 40-50 cents higher than a year ago, but that spread will be erased by Labor Day," said Mark Jenkins, spokesman for AAA. "This year, motorists should benefit from a relatively quiet hurricane season along the east coast. Although pump prices may fluctuate with surging holiday demand, AAA does not forecast a significant hike, unless there is an unexpected disruption in supply."

It's the 16th day gas prices have dropped in the state, a total of nine cents since Sunday. However, drivers are still paying 42 cents more than this time last year, according to AAA's report.
