99-Year-Old Killed, 2 Others Hurt In Palm Coast Crash

By on June 12, 2018 in WNDB News

Palm Coast, FL – A 99-year-old Palm Coast woman dies after the car she was in slammed into another vehicle which troopers believe jumped right in front of them.

The Florida Highway Patrol says it happened around 9:30 this morning at the intersection of Pine Grove Drive and Belle Terre Parkway in Palm Coast.

FHP Sergeant Harold Smith tells us charges are pending at this time against 20-year-old Danielle Harris of Palm Coast, the driver of the 2016 Ford Fiesta involved in the wreck.

“Preliminary investigative findings indicate that [Harris] was stopped on Pine Grove at the intersection of Belle Terre,” Smith added. “[Harris] entered the northbound lanes of Belle Terre with the intention of turning left to travel southbound {on Pine Grove].”

According to the accident report, Harris turned right in front of a 2010 Hyundai Accent driven by 51-year-old Lilly Buts as she was crossing the intersection using the inside northbound lane of Belle Terre.

“When the driver of [the Fiesta] entered the northbound lanes of Belle Terre Parkway, she violated the right of way of [the Accent],” Smith noted. “The front of [the Accent] then collided with the left side of [the Fiesta].”

The impact sent the Accent across the southbound lanes of Belle Terre and into a grassy area west of the road, where it came to final rest. The Fiesta ended up in the median facing north.

The woman who died – 99-year-old Rae Cabot – was a passenger in the Accent. She was declared dead soon after arrival at Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach.

Buts and Harris were transported to Florida Hospital Flagler, with Buts suffering minor injuries and Harris listed in serious condition.

It’s not clear if Cabot was wearing a seatbelt when the crash happened, but the other people involved were, per FHP. Troopers also think alcohol or drugs were not a factor.

One lane of Belle Terre in both directions was closed for over an hour after the crash.
