Volusia County, FL -Update: In Thursday's meeting the County Council unanimously approved a proposal to demolish what used to be the Sun and Surf Motel in Daytona Beach to make room for off beach parking.

"This motel was a mess," said County Manager Jim Dinneen. "We're gonna tear it down, and right now, the faster you get it down the better because it's creating issues for, not only, rodents and things like that, but we're also getting people drifting into it that are homeless that are trying to set up shop in there. And we also had some drug issues. So we want it down quickly."

Speaking of the demolition schedule, Jessica Winterwerp, Volusia County Coastal Director, said "this also takes advantage of the off season work, too. We're not going to be impacting during the peak season of tourism."

Earlier Reporting:

In Thursday's meeting, the County Council will review a proposal to demolish what used to be the Sun and Surf Motel in Daytona Beach to make room for off beach parking.

The County bought that property last July, according to John Angiulli, Volusia County Public Works Director, "as one of the parcels that we've identified for off beach parking."

The County got 5 bids and Cross Construction Services, Inc., out of Lutz, FL put in the lowest bid - $400,000. "The demolition costs are a little higher than normal," said Angiulli, because the site has been identified as containing asbestos. Cross Construction Services will be handling the asbestos abatement on top of the demolition of the property.

The property was vacated in December 2015. Fences surround the property, but people still get in. This, and the fact that it's a bit of an eye sore, has prompted the County to go ahead and demolish the property prior to the off beach parking lot plan being finalized.

Once the contract is awarded it'll take about 3 to 4 months to demolish the property. The asbestos abatement process can be lengthy, and demolition can't start until it's finished.
