Edgewater, FL - A burglar was stopped after trying to break into an Edgewater home when the 81-year-old resident of the home came out with a pistol and fired shots, possibly hitting the suspect.
The incident occurred around 9:15 AM Monday morning, at 662 Old Mission Rd. as the 81-year-old man was lying in bed with his wife and heard someone knocking on the front door and ringing the doorbell. The homeowner looked out the window but did not recognize the man outside, so he didn't answer the door.
According to Volusia County Sheriff's Office (VCSO), when no one answered the door, the suspect put on a pair of white gloves and went to the back of the house. The victim grabbed a pistol for protection. That's when he heard his living-room window break and saw the suspect reach through the window to clear glass.
The victim fired three to four shots at the suspect, according to VCSO. When the suspect fled and got away in his truck, the victim says he fired three to four more shots. Andrew Gant, a spokesman for VCSO says there is a possibility that the shots may have hit the suspect. "There's a good chance that he may have gotten him at least once, so we don't know if he's injured or not, but it's a possibility," says Gant.
The victim and his wife are unharmed, and the only damage to the home was the broken window. The suspect was described as a white man in his 30's or 40's with dirty blonde hair, wearing a light blue shirt and khaki pants. He was believed to be driving a white, mid-2000s-era Chevrolet Silverado 1500.
VCSO is investigating and asking for any information that may lead to an arrest. "We want to find the guy, the burglar, and put him in handcuffs for his crimes, so anyone who can help us do that, we're glad to hear from them," says Gant.
