Korona, FL - A 59-year-old man was killed when the motorcycle he was driving collided with a semi truck, marking the sixth fatality this year at the intersection in front of the White Eagle Lounge located in Korona, Flagler County. The crash happened at around 3:20 PM Monday at the intersection of U.S. 1 and old Dixie Highway. 59-year-old Gordon Therrien was traveling on a motorcycle westbound on South Old Dixie Highway, and 57-year-old Abraham Cannon was traveling his truck northbound on U.S. 1. Therrien attempted to turn left onto U.S. 1 in the path of the truck, and the front of the truck collided with the motorcycle, according to Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reports. Therrien was pronounced dead at the scene, and Cannon sustained no injuries, according to FHP reports. Cannon was wearing a seatbelt, and it is not known at this time whether alcohol was involved in the crash. According to the Flagler County Sheriff's Office (FCSO), the intersection where the crash occurred has been a dangerous intersection for a long time. "It's a large curve, and you have some blind angles there. Cars go extremely fast in that area, and if somebody pulls out, it's very hard to stop in time," says Brittany Kershaw, Public Information Officer for the FCSO. According to FCSO records, Monday's fatality was the sixth at that location in nine months. Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly had written a letter to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) in February following a crash at that intersection that had resulted in five fatalities and three injuries. Staly wrote the letter asking the FDOT to install a traffic light at the intersection. FDOT recommended that a roundabout be installed. "(FDOT) was going to work on that (roundabout). As far as I know, there was no construction started on that," says Kershaw. Staly wrote a letter again to FDOT on Tuesday, in response to Monday's crash, asking for a traffic light to be installed, if not permanently, then until a roundabout can be installed, according to FCSO.
