Flagler County, FL - 2017 has already been the wettest year on record for Flagler County since at least 1995 with the year-to-date total rainfall measured at the Emergency Operations Center in Bunnell totaling 72.16 inches so far.
According to Flagler County officials, the previous County record for rainfall was 67.87 inches back in 1995, and the yearly rainfall average since 1995 has been 49.72 inches.
With about one more month before 2017 comes to a close, Flagler County could potentially see even higher rainfall measurements. “It is very likely the rainfall total will increase further by the end of the year,” Emergency Management Technician Bob Pickering explains. Pickering has been keeping weather records for Flagler County since he was hired in 1994.
“The closest official observation station is in Daytona Beach, and their wettest year was in 1953 with 79.29 inches of rainfall for the year,” Pickering adds.
Flagler County officials say the contributing factors to this year's high rainfall totals are the following:
- An active rainy season during the summer months
- Hurricane Irma, which brought about 14 inches of rain
- A nor’easter in October that also brought 14 inches of rainfall
- A low-pressure system on Thanksgiving with 4.65 inches of rain measured at the Emergency Operations Center
