DeLand, FL - Two DeLand Middle School students were arrested on Monday afternoon after DeLand Police say the students falsely reported that they had a bomb and that they were going to shoot up the school.
Police responded to DeLand Middle School, located at 1400 S. Aquarius Ave. in DeLand just after noon on Monday after two male students made phone calls to 9-1-1 threatening the school. The school was placed on lockdown, and a bomb squad was called to the scene, along with the Volusia County Sheriff's Office and a K-9 unit, according to the DeLand Police Department.
The school was on lockdown for about an hour or two as authorities searched for explosives or anything suspicious. "We did find two backpacks that were unaccounted for, and we checked those out, but there was nothing found, and then the school was cleared," says Chris Graham, Community Information Specialist for the City of DeLand.
No one was injured in the incident. "Thankfully all of the students were safe and they were all accounted for," adds Graham.
The two students were at the school at the time of the arrest. The names and ages of the students have not been released, but both students are being charged with a felony for making a false report concerning planting a bomb.
