Daytona Beach, FL - For the third time in two months, the Daytona Beach Police Department hauls in a large number of people in an undercover prostitution sting.
17 people - including 16 women and a man - were taken into custody during an all-day operation last Thursday by DBPD, with most of the arrests coming on the U.S.1/Ridgewood Avenue corridor or on side streets nearby.
This comes around two weeks after a similar DBPD sting saw 17 people booked at Volusia County Jail. 16 others were also caught in an undercover prostitution sting in Daytona Beach at the beginning of May.
Many of the arrested have been charged and/or convicted of prostitution in the past, according to the arrest reports.
11 people are facing felonies in this latest sting, with the rest getting misdemeanors, according to DBPD's Problem Oriented Policing Unit. Some are also facing drug possession charges after officers found drugs on their person or nearby, while others were charged with probation violations.
The man who was arrested - 38-year-old John W. Boswell of Daytona Beach - allegedly tried to sell a stolen Bluetooth speaker worth $150 to one of the undercover officers during the sting. Boswell also did a "pat down" to the officer before allowing one of the women arrested in the sting - 38-year-old Bobbie S. Strausbaugh of Daytona Beach - to go inside that officer's unmarked vehicle, according to her arrest report.
37-year-old Jennifer S. Crawford of Daytona Beach was placed on suicide watch after officers caught her trying to hang herself with her own clothing inside a DBPD transport wagon, per her arrest report. Crawford also allegedly threatened to punch the undercover officer in the face if she found out he was an officer and had to be physically removed from the vehicle after physically resisting another officer trying to place handcuffs on her.
