Holly Hill, FL - A 13-year-old student at Holly Hill K-8 School was charged with a felony on Wednesday after Volusia County Sheriff's Office (VCSO) says he threatened to shoot a classmate. The student is the 29th to be charged by VCSO with threatening Volusia schools or students since the deadly Valentine's Day shooting in Parkland, FL. On Tuesday, the 13-year-old's teacher wrote a referral saying, "(the student) had threatened to ‘shoot’ Sara if she wrote his name on something. He has continued to yell out inappropriate words and noises in class despite several verbal warnings in the past.” The incident was reported to a school resource deputy on Wednesday morning. The student was arrested and sent to the Department of Juvenile Justice on Wednesday afternoon. He was charged with threatening to discharge a destructive device. Another Holly Hill student was arrested last month for threatening violence at school. Read more here. VCSO continues to remind students and parents that anyone who makes threats involving guns or other destructive devices at school or on social media will be held responsible. The defendants or their families could end up footing the bill for the cost of investigating and prosecuting each school threat incident. That bill could cost at least $1,032. “I don’t know what else to do,” says Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood. “Parents, you wouldn’t allow your kids to stand up in a movie theater and yell ‘Fire!’ or fly on an airplane at 30,000 feet and yell ‘Hijack!’ Why is this OK? It’s not OK, and we will continue to hold students and parents accountable." Copyright Southern Stone Communications 2018.
