Daytona Beach, FL - Two-time Formula 1 World Champion Fernando Alonso (left) can now call himself a Rolex 24 winner after steady rain forced officials at Daytona International Speedway to cut the endurance race short.
The nasty weather we've been dealing with for most of the past 24 hours led to race officials halting the 57th annual edition of the Rolex 24 twice, including with around ten minutes to go before the race was supposed to stop at 2:35 p.m. Sunday (January 27th).
When the red flag flew for the second time during the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season opener, Alonso and his #10 Cadillac DPi Wayne Taylor Racing teammates - Jordan Taylor, Renger van der Zande and Kamui Kobayashi - had the lead thanks to his passing the #31 Cadillac DPi of Whelen Engineering Racing on Turn One seven minutes earlier.
“Very, very proud of the job we achieved today,” said Alonso, who also co-drove to victory in last year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans. “The race itself was very, very difficult. Conditions were changing all the time. But we had perfect execution. We led in night, day, dry and wet.”
We've had a long and wet weekend at the #Rolex24, but it's been filled with memorable moments!
