Volusia County Sees Second Fatal Accident In 6-Hour Period

DeLand, FL - Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the second fatal vehicle accident in a 6-hour period today (June 2). The latest happened at about 1:30 p.m. on SR 44 at Prevatt Avenue just east of I-4.

FHP is reporting that the accident involved two vehicles and a motorcycle with a 69-year-old Port Orange man pronounced dead at the scene. That man was on his motorcycle stopped behind another vehicle at the red light east bound on SR 44. The second vehicle was also eastbound but for an unknown reason, failed to stop, rear-ending the motorcycle and pushing it under the vehicle stopped in front of him.

The motorcycle caught fire after the initial impact.

The road was blocked for some time as FHP investigated the scene.

The investigation into the accident continues. Charges are pending against the driver that failed to stop.
