
DeLand, FL - During today's Volusia County Council meeting, two new hires were confirmed. County Manager George Recktenwald said the new Community Assistance Division Director, Carmen Hall, has served 13 years in local government. She began her career with Volusia County in the community assistance division in 2006 and has been the county's Community Services Operations Manager since 2016.
A new Emergency Medical Services Division Director, Jason Brady was also confirmed. Brady was selected from eight semifinalist candidates. He brings 27 years of experience to Volusia County. He's been the Director of EMS Operations with the Medical Center Navicent Health in Macon, Ga. since 2013. Brady is expected to start work as the Volusia County EMS Director on July 29, 2019.
Also on today's agenda was a resolution to create a 2020 census complete count committee. Volusia County Assistant Budget Manager Brian Rothwell said the census is very important to the budget. The federal government uses census numbers to allocate more than $675 billion annually in federal funds. Volusia Country Chair Ed Kelley suggested that District 2 Representative Billie Wheeler and District 1 Representative Barbara Girtman co-chair the census complete count committee. The resolution to create the committee was passed unanimously. The 2019-2020 proposed budget will have $100,000 for census related expenses.
The first reading of a resolution asking to change the administrative rezoning of 1,940 parcels. The request is to change from the Urban Single-Family Residential (R-4) zoning classification to the Urban Single-Family Residential (R-5) zoning classification. The request is being made to accommodate a developer in acquiring property and redeveloping the land for more intensive development. The area is east of John Anderson Drive/CR 4001, west of Ocean Shore Boulevard/SR A1A, north of Sandcastle Drive and the City of Ormond Beach, and south of Michael Crotty Bicentennial Park. The first reading was approved unanimously. The second reading is scheduled for the July 16 meeting.
