Daytona Beach, FL - The Daytona Beach Police Department is reporting that a 13-year-old teenage boy has died as a result of a crash involving a stolen dirt bike.

Authorities say officers were called to the intersection of Derbyshire Road and 6th Street around 2:15 in the afternoon (May 9th) after multiple calls for service were placed by witnesses.

Members of the Traffic Homicide Investigation Unit arrived shortly thereafter to check the scene and determined what happened.

Investigators believe that a 13-year-old black male was operating a yellow and white 2020 Suzuki RMZ 450 as it headed southbound towards the intersection of Derbyshire and 6th. Their reports say that it appears the dirt bike was going at a high rate of speed as it traveled on the grassy shoulder east of Derbyshire between the road and the sidewalk.

Around that time, a 56-year-old woman driving a black Toyota RAV4 south on Derbyshire made a left turn at the intersection to head east on 6th. Additionally, investigators say she had the green light to do so.

After turning, the woman reported that she saw the bike out of the corner of her eye while it tried to cross 6th. As that happened, the bike collided head on with the front of the Toyota, completely ejecting the teenager from the bike. The teen was also not wearing a helmet.

He was taken by paramedics to Halifax Health Medical Center, where he passed away shortly after arrival.

The driver of the Toyota remained uninjured and stayed at the scene with police. After speaking with investigators, she was allowed to leave in her own vehicle.

Since the crash, investigators determined that the bike was stolen from Daytona Power Sports back on March 27th.  The dirt bike was taken from the scene by police and will be processed as evidence.

Police noted that no other people or vehicles were involved in the incident.

They will also determine charges once the accident investigation is complete, according to their press release. Investigators are also actively searching for evidence as to how the bike was stolen and who was involved in the theft.
