Flagler Beach, FL - A detour is set as the Florida Department of Transportation begins a project to replace a temporary repair on a hurricane damaged roadway.
Following Hurricane Matthew in 2016, parts of A1A in Flagler County were damaged and temporary repairs were put into place.
Starting today (February 26th), FDOT will begin improvements to help protect A1A from erosion and future storm events. Those improvements will call for southbound A1A to close in certain parts.
"There is a shift that's starting that will move southbound traffic from A1A to a detour that's in place," said Jessica Ottaviano, Public Information Officer with FDOT.
Southbound traffic, between South 7th Street and South 23rd Street, will be directed onto South Central Avenue, then back onto A1A. Northbound traffic will remain on A1A.
Ottaviano also said that access to businesses and homes will be maintained. Any driveways that have only A1A access will be available from the Northbound side of A1A.
The detour will be in place as long as the construction work continues. Schedules may change due to weather or other circumstances. Message boards will also be in place to help drivers.
