Volusia County, FL - The International Coastal Cleanup began more than 30 years ago, and registration for the next one in Volusia County begins tomorrow. Volusia County Habitat Conservation Plan Manager Sami McCorkle said the registration period runs from August 1 through the 31st. The Cleanup itself takes place on September 21.
McCorkle said you can sign up online at volusia.org/cleanup and those that pre-register will have supplies available for them at the cleanup site they choose, such as buckets, water and possible giveaways for those that show up early. She does suggest that volunteers bring gloves and their own water, which they will be able to replenish at the site they've chosen. Other items needed are for personal protection, such as sunscreen, a hat, comfortable clothing, and appropriate footwear.
While there are 20 sites suggested on the website, McCorkle said volunteers can pick up supplies at the chosen site but are welcome to clean any stretch of the beach that they'd like. Something that's really important for the volunteers to have is the datasheet as Ocean Conservancy catalogs the debris picked up.
Groups are welcome and can also register at the same website. Last year, 1915 volunteers collected 7,356 pounds of trash. McCorkle is hoping for a few more people to show up this year.
