DELAND, Fla. - A small airplane crashed into the woods on Friday near DeLand, according to a release from the Volusia Sheriff's Office. The incident led to only minor injuries to its single occupant according to the statement.
The crash went down at around 1:49 am on Friday, police said. The plane was reported to be a single-engine 1967 Cessna 172 flying over Lake George State Forest, to the northwest of DeLand. It's said to have lost power and quickly descended, eventually crashing into the woods off of Marsh Road. Its N-Number was N8257L.
The pilot was on a flight from Slidell, Louisiana to DeLand, evidently close to his destination when things went wrong. He was said to be awake and alert when he got out of the wreckage, and there were no other occupants reported to be on board. The plane came to rest sideways and downward in the trees, bent up and damaged from impact.
Not much more information was given by the Volusia Sheriff's Office, as is customary in instances of small plane crashes in the area. Any additional details will be added to this story as they become available.
