ORMOND BEACH, Fla. - Police officers in Ormond Beach reportedly shot a 60-year-old woman on Tuesday, who they say charged at them with a knife. Nancy Vitale, the woman police identified in the shooting, is being criminally charged for her alleged actions.
The incident reportedly began with an officer parked at Andy Romano Park with his window down while on patrol. While sitting in her car on his police computer, Vitale is said to have approached the car and told the officer, "I have a lot of weapons, and I am going to kill you". The officer rolled up his window and radioed for backup, as Vitale reportedly began punching the window.
At this point, the officer is said to have tried to drive away, when Vitale allegedly climbed onto his car. She then dismounted, and began to walk toward what police say was her own vehicle. As the officer tried to follow to get Vitale's plate, she reportedly crashed her car into the police car more than once.
Two other officers arrived on-scene while this went on, and then Vitale allegedly exited her vehicle with a knife. She's said to have begun running towards the other two officers, prompting one of them to fire a shot. Vitale continued charging, police say, and so then a second shot was fired at her. At least the second shot hit Vitale. She was then hospitalized for her injuries, with no further updates currently having been given about her status.
Vitale is being charged with battery on a law enforcement officer, as well as three counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.
