One Shot After Altercation with Volusia Deputy

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. - One man was shot by a Volusia Sheriff's deputy this weekend after a tense altercation at his parents' home. 43 year-old Michael Collmar was given non life-threatening injuries after the incident, and was treated both on-scene and later at the hospital.

The ordeal began in the early afternoon Sunday, when deputies received a call that Collmar was 'acting erratically' with two knives in his possession. Collmar's parents were concerned about his and their safety during an apparent crisis of mental health. It was the second time in three weeks that the VSO received a call regarding Collmar.

Deputies responded to the home, trying to de-escalate the situation with Collmar verbally. Police say their attempts were not successful. The report of the incident says Collmar was not brought down after being tased multiple times and hit with non-lethal rounds. He exited the front door where a deputy shot him, before medical care was then administered.

No individuals other than Collmar were injured. Sheriff Mike Chitwood on Monday showed bodycam footage of the incident and said that Collmar suffers from bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. "I don't know what more we could've done," Chitwood said. "It's a matter of time before the parents end up dead."
