One man is dead from a shooting that occurred at Volusia Gold & Diamond in Daytona Beach on Friday, according to the Daytona Beach Police Department. The man, who was killed around 12:52 pm, was reportedly an employee of the store.
According to initial reports from the incident, the victim was working at Volusia Gold & Diamond when he became involved in a dispute with a customer, identified as 83-year-old John Craiger. The two reportedly had a brief verbal argument, before Craiger is said to have pulled out a firearm and shot the victim.
Following the initial shot, another employee of Volusia Gold & Diamond reportedly produced a firearm of their own and began returning fire at Craiger. The two are said to have 'exchanged gunfire' resulting in Craiger being shot and wounded. Another person present at the scene was reportedly able to further injure Craiger by striking him over the head with a blunt object.
Both Craiger and the victim were taken to Halifax Medical Center to be treated for their injuries. The victim was pronounced dead some time after the incident, having succumbed to their gunshot wound. Craiger was treated for multiple gunshot wounds and a laceration to the head. He's being criminally charged with one count each of first degree murder and attempted first degree murder.
Addressing the media following the shooting, Daytona Beach Police Chief Jakari Young stated it is not believed the shootout stemmed from an attempted robbery. He also assured the community that no additional suspects are at-large, and so there is no further danger stemming from the incident.
