New Smyrna, FL - The New Smyrna Beach Fire Department is training this week for how to respond if there is a fire at a boat dock.
The Fire Department crew will be performing a simulated boat fire at the end of the docks at the City Marina, located at 201 N. Riverside Dr.
The training will take place May 30 through June 1 from 9 AM to 1 PM, and crews will have to formulate a plan to deal with the simulated fire.
"The focus on this training will be firefighter safety," lead instructor Lieutenant Mike Sanford says. "Firefighter safety is paramount while working on the docks."
Sanford cautions that there are a myriad of things that could go wrong in the case of a boat fire. A firefighter could fall in the water in full firefighting gear, the boat on fire could drift into other boats if the lines are burned through, and there is also the danger of the docks collapsing while the firefighters work.
This simulated boat fire will provide invaluable training for the fire crews in the event of a catastrophe near the water.
