New Smyrna Beach, FL - The City of New Smyrna Beach will take the lead on a multiple-agency social media campaign to encourage people to lock their car doors at 9 PM each night to prevent burglaries.
The campaign runs from July 1- July 8 and will involve local law enforcement agencies using the hashtag
#9pmRoutine to remind people to lock their doors. This is not a new concept, and many law enforcement agencies around the country already use this hashtag in their social media campaigns.
So far this year in New Smyrna Beach, there have been 89 reported car break-ins. There were 196 car break-ins reported during 2016. “Many thefts and burglaries are preventable if folks would simply lock their doors,” said NSB Chief of Police, Mike Coffin. "Officers in the field leave cards on vehicles to encourage people to lock their cars. Getting the message out through this Crime Stoppers social media campaign will reach a lot more people.”
