Deland, FL - During Tuesday evening's Volusia County School Board meeting, board members decided to move forward with a medical marijuana policy. VCSD General Counsel Mike Dyer described what impact the policy will have on the school district. The next step was to approve a motion to amend the current policy and publicize the changes to the public for a 30-day period for people to review and comment. An amendment was made to the original motion to name the policy as Zoe's Policy, in reference to the child whose parents got the ball rolling on medical marijuana in the schools. Several members of the School Board made comment on the policy. School Board Vice Chair Dr. John Hill said he was glad the policy was moving forward. Superintendent Tom Russell reported that during a meeting of the Florida Association of District School Superintendents, other superintendents asked about the policy and requested the PowerPoint presentation to use in their own schools. Chair Linda Cuthbert posed the question of naming the policy for Zoe. That amendment was approved unanimously by the board. Two Florida counties, Broward and Santa Rosa already adopted medical marijuana policies. The Orange County School Board is the third, approving a policy on Tuesday.
