Holly Hill, FL - Police are launching a criminal investigation after a drunk driver ends the life of a bicyclist.
On Friday morning (April 5th), a bicyclist was traveling within the paved shoulder of Southbound Ridgewood Avenue while another vehicle in the outside lane drove down the road at a high rate of speed.
As the bicyclist crossed into Ridgewood to change lanes, the other vehicle hit them, ejecting him off of his bike and onto the road.
The bicyclist sustained serious injuries and was later pronounced dead at Halifax Health Medical Center.
While Holly Hill police investigated the crash, officers obtained footage from Auto Masters on Ridgewood Avenue that showed him traveling down the road at a high rate of speed as he approached the bicyclist.
When police made contact with the driver, the investigator noticed a strong odor of alcohol on his face and bloodshot eyes. The driver also slurred his words as he was questioned about the incident.
The driver also stated in front of police that he had consumed multiple beers before the crash.
With that information, police decided to launch a criminal investigation against the driver, which could yield DUI charges against him.
The investigation is still ongoing, meaning that any and all criminal charges as of right now are pending.
