New Smyrna Beach, FL - Florida Hospital New Smyrna has earned accreditation in Adult Transthoracic Echocardiography by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission.
Echocardiography can detect heart disease or signs of serious cardiovascular conditions.
Lindsay Cashio, spokeswoman for FL Hospital New Smyrna Beach, says an echocardiogram is a non-invasive procedure that uses a handheld sonic transducer that is placed at different angles on the patient’s chest. When the waves emitted from the transducer reach the heart, they’re reflected back, or echo, to a computer that produces real-time, moving images of the heart. This diagnostic procedure assists in determining heart structure and functioning capabilities.
To achieve accreditation, the hospital underwent an application and review process that consisted of a detailed self-evaluation and a thorough review by a panel of medical experts. The IAC accreditation process assessed the critical operational and technical components of Florida Hospital New Smyrna.
"Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, killing 1 American every 40 seconds," said Ken Mattison, Florida Hospital New Smyrna CEO. "The accreditation from the IAC is a 'seal of approval' that patients can rely on to indicate consistent quality care and a dedication to continuous improvement."
