Bunnell, FL - Flagler County Emergency Management is offering free community emergency response training for residents on October 7. Director Jonathan Lord said the Community Emergency Response Team training program is also for individuals. Even though the focus is on team training, he looks at the curriculum and sees the training as a way to educate residents. If they end up creating a team, that's a bonus. But, don't worry if you don't have a team. Lord says he just really wants all residents to have the information.
“It is a way to improve overall community preparedness by educating residents about how to prepare for and respond to the hazards most likely to impact our community,” he said. “When our residents are trained in these basic disaster response skills, it allows our first responders to focus on the most critical needs in a disaster.”
The training includes basic disaster preparedness, fire safety, utility controls, like how to turn off gas and electric, some basic first aid, some very light, basic search and rescue skills, disaster psychology, terrorism, team organization, and a hands-on disaster simulation.
Registration is now being accepted for the no-cost, 30-hour program that's provided by Flagler County Emergency Management in partnership with Flagler County Fire Rescue, and Flagler Volunteer Services. You can register by email or by calling 386-313-4200. Classes are scheduled for Monday and Wednesday evenings, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. They begin on October 7 and run through November 6.
