Flagler County, FL – The George Washington Carver Community Center in Flagler County has started a drumline thanks to donations they have received over the past year.
The Center, at 206 E. Drain Street, Bunnell, offers tutoring, an after-school study space, internet access, GED classes, employment counseling and athletic tournaments among other community services.
“We’ve been working to get this going for more than a year,” says Flagler County Youth Center Director, Cheryl Massaro. “We are very excited about it.”
Donations and fundraising that go towards the George Washington Carver Foundation, supported by the Board of County Commissioners, were able to bring not only this drumline to the community but several other educational and recreational activities. The Foundation was able to save the Center and it helped create its sustainability.
A donation of a full drum set from Nate McLaughlin, a musician, and the Flagler County Commission Chair, was able to get the Center’s Drum Corps project off the ground.
“This will be a great program,” says McLaughlin. “I didn’t make Little League as a kid, but my dad asked me what I could do. I got a drum set, and music has been my thing ever since.”
The Center still needs bass and snare drums for their drumline. Donations are welcome and those interested in helping the Center are asked to call Rev. Elijah Emanuel at 386-338-8714 or contact him via email at emanuele@flaglerschools.com.
“We want to have a nice drum line,” says Massaro. “We want to have dancers along with the drums so we can make a showing at the various parades that are held throughout Flagler County every year.”
