Palm Coast, FL - Detectives are pursuing at least one lead in the case of a man who cleaned out a Walmart register after apparently recording an employee's security code on his smartphone.
The Flagler County Sheriff's Office says $1,300 in cash was taken around 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon (January 20th) from the Palm Coast Walmart on Cypress Point Parkway by a black man with a full beard who drove away from the store in a dark-colored Dodge Challenger with black tire rims.
The theft wasn't reported to FCSO until three days later by a loss prevention worker at the store, according to a case report.
That worker told investigators on Wednesday evening (January 23rd) that security video caught the man walking into the store through the grocery entrance just after 2:30 p.m. that Sunday and speaking to an employee near the front registers.
That employee and the man then went to a nearby register, where she put in a security code to access the computer controlling it. The video shows the man standing next to her while holding up a smartphone in such a way that detectives think he may have been recording her code, per the report.
It was around 15 minutes after he entered the store when the video shows the man - who was now by himself - approaching a register in the electronics section and typing on its touch screen while holding the smartphone in his hand so he could look at that screen.
Around 5 minutes after that, the man managed to physically open the cash till by scanning an item and hitting the "cash" button, at which point he took all the bills over $20 from inside and left the store, according to the report.
Investigators say the images captured on the video appear to be of a man whose full identity was redacted from the report, but no arrest has been made at this point. FCSO tells us the man's brother does drive a Dodge Challenger that's similar in appearance to the vehicle the suspect left the scene in, but it's not clear if it's the same vehicle since the vehicle tag wasn't caught on video.
The suspect is described as a "tall" black male with tattoos and a thin athletic build along with a full beard, mustache and short black hair. He had on a blue Adidas T-shirt and long athletic pants along with white shoes which had blue shoelaces.
