Volusia County, FL - Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Kim Montes is reporting that a 54-year-old Edgewater man was riding eastbound on Pioneer Trail in New Smyrna Beach about 5:30 p.m. yesterday (August 3).
About midway between S.R. 44 and Tomoka Farms Road, Montes said that Robert Devine did not negotiate a curve properly and lost control. He traveled off the road onto the south shoulder, then struck a culvert, going airborne and landing in a ditch, where he came to final rest. The investigation continues.
A second fatal accident happened this afternoon (August 4), this time involving a pickup truck. Montes said that a 54-year-old Fort Myers man was traveling southbound on Prevatt Avenue from State Road 44 in DeLand just after 3 p.m., when for an unknown reason his vehicle left the road. The left front of the pickup hit a tree.
The man, who is not being identified pending next of kin notification, died at the scene. This crash also remains under investigation.
