Teen Files To Run For Edgewater Mayor

Edgewater, FL - There’s a new candidate for mayor of Edgewater. He’s an Edgewater native, he runs his own business, and he’s a high school student?

Meet 17-year-old Diezel Depew, the latest addition to the local mayoral race in Edgewater. Depew officially filed for the spot on April 5, according to the Volusia County Supervisor of Elections.

According to his Facebook page, Depew—using the phrase “Make Edgewater Great Again”—says he wants to lower utility prices, clean and protect the Indian River Lagoon, and control corporate development in Edgewater. In an interview with the Daytona Beach News-Journal, Depew said he’s been going to city council meetings for four years and was inspired to run because of Rep. Marjorie Tayor Green (R-GA).

Outside of the political theater, Depew is a high school student and currently operates his own lawncare business called Deez Cuts. He plans to attend Daytona State College.

Some might question the validity of his campaign because of his young age. According to the Volusia County Charter, you must be registered to vote to run for local public office. Supervisor of Elections Lisa Lewis confirmed to News Daytona Beach that Depew has pre-registered to vote, which allows him to run for office. Depew also turns 18 in May.

Currently, Depew is running against former Edgewater Mayor Michael Ignaziak. WNDB plans to interview Depew Wednesday (April 27) morning on Good Day Daytona, beginning at 9 a.m.
