Commissioner Sosa Resigning From Deltona City Commission

City Now Accepting Candidates For District 6 Seat

UPDATE (12:35 PM): Commissioner Sosa says he is leaving the Deltona City Commission in order to run for Volusia County Council District 5.

“I opted to resign now, effective November 8, to give residents of Deltona District 6 the opportunity to run in 2022,” said Sosa in a phone interview with News Daytona Beach.

Ready for the challenges leading the county can bring, Sosa said he wants to take aim at taxes if he secures the District 5 spot come November. He said this was spurred after the city had received money through the Affordable Care Act.

“With the money we acquired, we could have gone back to a rollback rate,” said Sosa. “Because even at a rollback rate, the assessed value would have given us more than a 3 percent increase over last year’s taxes with increased assessed values.”

At the county level, he wants to go through the budget and see what they can cut to save taxpayers money. Sosa also said he will step down officially on November 8, not November 13 as originally reported in a release from the city. His resignation letter also stated that he will be stepping down on November 8.

Original reporting can be found below.

Deltona, FL - Effective November 13, Deltona City Commissioner David Sosa will officially resign from the city commission.

A prepared release from the city states that Sosa tendered his resignation at Tuesday's (April 25) city commission meeting, but did not directly state why Sosa is resigning. A resignation letter from Sosa, available on the city’s website, also did not indicate why Sosa is resigning.

The same release said residents interested in serving on the city commission will need to fill out and file candidate paperwork with the city, which can be found online (click here). You can also contact the filing officer at (386) 878-8500 for more information and help. The deadline to file paperwork is June 17.

According to the Volusia County Supervisor of Elections Office, no one previously filed to run for the District 6 spot in Deltona; candidates, however, have filed to run for mayor and commissioners in Districts 1, 3, and 5.
