UPDATE: According to the police report from April 13, detectives spoke with the suspect's mother after the shooting took place. She stated "that boy has a gun too and you should get the gun he pointed at my daughter's head." The daughter she was speaking of is the suspect's, Fredryonna Grimes, sister. That sister is the mother of the victim's, Malik Hinson's child.

It should also be noted that at this time, Hinson is paralyzed from the chest down.

DeLand, FL - One suspect is in the Volusia County Jail and DeLand Police are looking for another in the shooting of a 19-year-old DeLand man on April 13. Police Chief Jason Umberger says 18-year-old Fredryonna Grimes turned herself in. She's charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder with a firearm.

Umberger said his officers responded to a reported shooting at 409 1/2 Beresford Avenue around 3:45 p.m.  They found the 19-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the back.  Both identified Grimes as the shooter. "The victim advised that he'd been shot by an 18-year-old female who we later identified as Fredryonna Grimes. The police identified another victim who advised that Grimes attempted to shoot him as he attempted to flee the scene."

Based upon the investigation, Umberger said detectives identified a second suspect. "It has been determined that there is another shooter who accompanied Fredryonna Grimes. We are asking for the community's help in identifying that second shooter as we want to bring that person to justice as well.

Umberger said the victim is still in the hospital. "This 19-year-old victim that was shot in the back was transported to Central Florida Regional Hospital by air where he remains and is currently undergoing treatment."

Anyone with information on the second suspect should contact the DeLand Police Department at 386-626-7400 or submit an anonymous tip to volusia.crimewatchfl.com.
