Daytona Beach, FL - The Daytona Beach Police Department says their event did so well that they ran out of gift cards.
Yesterday (October 24th), both the Volusia County Sheriff's Office and the DBPD hosted individual Kicks 4 Guns events on both sides of the county, VCSO in the west and DBPD in the east.
According to Messod Bendayan, the public information officer for DBPD, their event pulled in 85 weapons off the streets, which was more than they anticipated. Last year, the department only saw 41 weapons turned in at the event, 72 in 2017 and 82 in 2016.
The event aimed for any type of firearm. Whether it was antique, broken or unwanted. Residents could have even returned stolen guns, which is what DBPD hoped for since they've seen plenty of criminal cases involving stolen guns.
"A lot of times when we see guns used in crimes they come from places where they're stolen from," said Bendayan.
Bendayan also said that DBPD wants to remind residents to secure their firearms and take them out of cars.
