DBCC Shares Concerns About First Step Shelter

Daytona Beach, FL - The First Step Shelter, its purpose and it's future continues to be a topic of discussion at the Daytona Beach City Commission meetings. Things were no different this week.

Commissioner Aaron Delgado requested a discussion of the procedures for admittance to First Step Shelter be added to the agenda after dealing with a situation firsthand.  He said that looking back on information from previous meetings it appeared that the Shelter would be open and available to just about anyone.  He was under the impression that anyone could walk up, any hour of the day and be admitted. Delgado said he also thought the mere existence of a homeless shelter would make it Pottinger-compliant.

Mayor Derrick Henry, who is also First Step Shelter Board Chair, said the Board has a different vision. He said their goal is to have people 'graduate' from homelessness. There are people who want to be part of that program and the ones that don't need a place to say, or a Safe Zone. Henry asked the Commissioners to give First Step some time to work out the kinks.

At the end of the public discussion between Commissioners, Board member Rose Ann Tornatore shared that there will be some big announcements at next week’s meeting regarding the Safe Zone.
