Daytona Sets Rainfall Record As Storms Move Through

Daytona Beach, FL - The Daytona Beach area sets a rainfall record thanks to the storm front which also pumped out a lot of severe thunderstorm and tornado watches and warnings all day yesterday (December 20th) from the National Weather Service. The NWS Melbourne office says 2.6 inches fell at Daytona Beach International Airport, breaking the old mark set on that date in 1983.
Most parts of Volusia County got between one to three inches of rain, but there was no real property damage or reports of tornado touchdowns or people hurt, according to NWS Melbourne forecaster Derrick Weitlich. "There were some lower rainfall amounts around a half an inch to an inch in some portions of Volusia County," Weitlich added. "The highest total that we saw in Volusia County is 3.7 inches near Enterprise." That's the same area where NWS sent out several severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings during the late morning hours, which Weitlich says was mostly based on radar readings. Parts of Flagler County got over an inch and a half, including the county's Emergency Operations Center.
A Wind Advisory is in effect for all of East Central Florida today (December 21st), with the coastal areas likely seeing the heaviest wind gusts of up to 40 miles per hour. High temperatures will likely stay in the 60's today, with some rain forecast for later in the day, per Weitlich.
