Daytona Man Convicted In Attempted Carjacking Near Pizza Shop

gavel Daytona Beach, FL - A Daytona Beach man with a long rap sheet is convicted again after a failed carjacking attempt. 19-year-old DeAndrew Hughley of Fulton Street was convicted by a Volusia County jury made up of 5 women and 1 man on Wednesday after only 30 minutes of deliberations. Prosecutors will seek to have Hughley sentenced to up to 30 years in prison as a Prison Releasee Reoffender, according to Spencer Hathaway, a spokesman for 7th Circuit State Attorney RJ Larizza. "Hughley’s prior criminal history includes 6 prior felony convictions, including 1 carjacking and 4 burglaries," Hathaway added. "Hughley was remanded into custody pending sentencing." The Daytona Beach Police Department says it all started around 10:30 PM last August 12th when Hughley tried to steal a car right in front of its owner at the Little Caesars on 918 West International Speedway Boulevard. The victim had just unlocked his car - leaving his keys inside - and was talking to a female acquaintance when he heard the car start and saw Hughley in the driver's seat, according to the incident report. Officers say the car owner ran over, opened the passenger door and yelled at Hughley to get out of the car. He then began punching and kicking Hughley in the hopes he would get out, per DBPD. It was at that point when Hughley put his hand underneath his shirt and yelled "don’t make me use this thing on you, bro," according to the police report. The woman also opened the driver's side door and started punching Hughley, at which point officers think he ran away yelling with his hand in his shirt as if he had some sort of weapon. The victim got his own gun from the glove compartment of his car and fired 1 round at Hughley as he ran off. The bullet missed its target, per the report. A K-9 unit tracking from the scene found Hughley on the 200 block of DeSoto Street and he was eventually caught following a foot chase. A black 9-millimeter Glock was found about 20 to 30 feet away from where he was arrested, according to the report. The gun was reported stolen out of Daytona Beach 5 months earlier. Hughley's sentencing date hasn't been set.
